Forest Park

Wildwood Trail

Portland is known, among other things, as a fantastic running town. Nike world headquarters are here, Adidas headquarters are here, and University of Oregon is just down I-5. Local races routinely attract thousands of participants, especially when they offer free beer after the run. Forget Gatorade – beer is Portland’s sports drink of choice.

To support the legions of area runners, the city has miles upon miles of roads, paths, and trails to explore. The best among them, by any measure, are found in Forest Park. Forest Park is one of the largest urban parks (or forests…) in the country, with about 5,100 acres of protected land. To give a little context: that’s equal to six Central Parks. Take that, New York! Right in the middle of a city of 500,000, Forest Park offers 70 miles of perfectly soft, shaded trails. The best part? It’s just a mile and a half from my home.

I go to Forest Park nearly every day to get my run in, and the trails just take me away. The year-round greenery, the creeks, the birds, the banana slugs that are literally the size of bananas (I’ll post a picture to prove it!) – there is something new to see every time I’m there. Sometimes, if I really zone out while I’m running, I think I’m back in northern Michigan – it just doesn’t seem possible that I’m in the middle of a city. Other times when I zone out, I’ll slip in the mud and fall down. That always brings me back…

This place is such a central part of my training that I am sure it will be the topic of many posts, so for now, we will settle with that introduction and a couple of pictures. Readers, Forest Park. Forest Park, readers.
